Title: X Marks The Spot - On Location With The X-Files
Author: Louisa Gradnitzer, Todd Pittson, Tom Braidwood
Format: Over-sized paperback
Price: $12.76 US £9.59 UK
Recommended By: Chris of The Project
Reason: I ordered this book from Amazon because I couldn't get a copy in the UK, and I loved it! It's a refreshing change from the usual unofficial episode guides in that it concentrates on the making of the show rather than the episode stories, and i'ts written by two location managers - in other words people who worked on the show for five years. There are many amusing stories and incidents recounted which will make you laugh out loud - a MUST for any Philes' bookshelf!

Title: Cujo (the novel)
Artist: Stephen King
Format: Paperback
Price: $6.39 US £4.79 UK
Recommended By: Chris of The Project
Reason: Just read this one, and you HAVE to read it too! Reminded me a lot of the sort of story The X Files would use as a Monster of the week. I keep expected M&S to enter and save the day - however Stephen King is not scared to bring in the most unexpected and shocking twists to his stories.
With some gripping scenes and shocking twists, this book seems to come alive as you read and you have to wonder what YOU would do in such a situation. Scary, Gripping, not your standard scary monster story. Read it now, but be warned DD fans...you'll never watch Beethoven in the same way again!

Title: The Lion's Game
Author: Nelson Demille
Format: Hardcover
Price: $18.96 £16.21 UK
Recommended By: Laurie (Laurie's Website)
Reason: I highly recommend Nelson Demille's "The Lion's Game."
It's about a former NYC homicide detective, who's now a
member of a federal anti-terrorist task force. A 747 lands
at JFK and all the passengers and crew aboard are dead. The
hero, come to the airport to meet a couple of U.S. marshals
bringing in a wanted Libyan terrorist on that flight,
figures out the Libyan connection right away.
He must match wits with a cunning, ruthless and insane
Libyan terrorist who hates the U.S. because they bombed
Khadaffi's compound and the terrorist's family was killed.
But the guy was never a decent fellow. During the bombing,
he murdered his lover because she was screaming in fright.
Anyway, our hero and his woman boss are very much attracted
to one another and start an affair during this time.
Throughout the book, he cracks remarks about The X-files,
wondering why Mulder and Scully aren't getting it on. When
he visits FBI headquarters regarding the case, he asks where
the X-Files department is. Great book!

Title: The House of Mirth
Author: Edith Wharton
Format: Hard and soft cover
Price: $3.96 US £2.98 UK
Recommended By: Julia (Julia's Site)
Reason: When I first heard that Gillian was going to portray Lily Bart in the
film version of the masterpiece, I literally jumped for joy. The House of
Mirth has been a favorite of mine for years now - a story of life and love,
taking place in the elegant nests of New York City early in the turn of the
century. This novel will call on several emotions while you read, so don't
forget to have a box of tissues near by. The House of Mirth is so far, the
only novel I've read where I've fallen so much for the characters that I am
driven to tears. As Gore Vidal says, "There are only three or four American
novelists who can be though of as 'major' and Edith Wharton is one." I cannot
even explain how true that statement is - Read this book! :) (Also available at Amazon.co.uk)

Title: Karma
Artist: Delerium
Format: CD
Price: $13.49 US £11.99 UK
Recommended By: Leyla Harrison (Leyla's Website)
Reason: I was looking for something different, and I found it on this
CD. Delerium, the same guys who were better known
as Frontline Assembly, weave an enchanting,
charged musical shroud that you can wrap yourself
in when you find the time for a little reflective
solitude. The hauntingly beautiful music
is an extraordinary trip in the history of music,
that goes back to soundscapes produced
by ancient cultures, combined with medieval
chants all put together with the ultimate
technology. I've heard Delerium called "industrial"
but I think "experimental ambient pop" is better.
The guest vocalists are incredible and perfectly suited to the
music. Just a few of them are: Sarah McLachlan, Lisa Gerrard from Dead
Can Dance, Kristy Thirsk, and Camille Henderson (Sarah McLachan's backup
vocalist sounding remarkable in her solo endeavor!). I actually own
two CDs -- one for the house, and one for the car. Also available at Amazon.co.uk.

Title: Spaceballs
Director: Mel Brooks
Format: VHS and DVD
Price: $9.94 VHS US and $17.49 DVD US
Recommended By: Shannon of Xanadu
Reason: My reason? Will "I adore Mel Brooks" do? Okay, so maybe this isn't the BEST Mel Brooks -- I think "Blazing Saddles" may hold that title -- but this is the one I can recite from start to finish. It's just so wonderfully silly and a great parody of both "Star Wars" and sci-fi in general. Besides, I never argue with the idea of staring at Bill Pullman for an hour and half.

Title: Summer of '49
Author: David Halberstam
Format: Paperback
Price: $5.59 US £4.20 UK.
Recommended By: Shannon of Xanadu
Reason: Every baseball fan should own this book, because every fan should know the story of that year's pennant race between the Yankees and Red Sox. David Halberstam dips back in time and brings baseball's legends to life, including people like Joe DiMaggio, whose persona and celebrity far transcended the game. This isn't a stats book; as Jose Chung would describe it, it's "non-fiction fiction." It reads like a novel, and the characters are not just intriguing; they're real. Also available at Amazon.co.uk.

Title: While I Was Gone
Author: Sue Miller
Format: Paperback, hardcover, audio cassettes, audio CD
Price: $6.47 US (paperback) £5.59 UK
Recommended By: Hiding of Hiding in the Light's X-Files Madness
Reason: I just recently finished this book, being Oprah's Book Club Selection for May 2000. It was an amazing read--so good, at the end I didn't want to stop. This story is about a woman named Jo Becker who seems to have a perfect life, but she is restless. Somone from her past comes back into her life, bringing back a horrible crime and startling new revelations. This author's style of writing really brings the worlds of past and present to life, and it's a book that will really make you stop to think. Also available at Amazon.co.uk.
